Learning Target: I can independently operate a Zoom recorder, use appropriate microphone techniques and record clean, high-quality audio. In this lesson, you will review your audio recording skills and experiment with different techniques to improve sound quality. You'll demonstrate your recording skills to earn your Sound — Creator Licence.
Estimated Time: 60-80min
MUST DO:
Work in a group of 2 students.
Sign out a Zoom H4n Pro recorder kit with headphones, batteries, Sd card and lavalier mic.
Get a Recording Great Sound Practice Checklist (paper copy in class)
Complete all three recording challenges. Make sure everyone takes turns operating the recorder.
IMPORTANT: Before every recording, announce the challenge, location or setting, and take number. For example: “Challenge 1, library, take one.” Write the actual Zoom recording filename on your checklist.
2. REVIEW YOUR EQUIPMENT
If this is your first time using a ZOOM, or you need a refresher watch these three Zoom recorder tutorials.
Review microphone inputs, recording levels, headphone monitoring and playback.
Make a short test recording to ensure your equipment is working correctly.
Record The Suspicious Sandwich dialogue in two different locations.
Keep your microphone position and recording settings the same.
Listen to both recordings and compare echo, background noise and voice clarity.
Record your observations on the checklist.
Record the dialogue three times using different recording levels.
Make one quiet, one correctly adjusted and one overly loud recording.
Keep your location and microphone position consistent.
Listen for hiss, background noise and distortion.
Compare the recordings and identify which sounds best.
Record the dialogue twice.
First, record with poor microphone positioning or inconsistent vocal delivery.
Next, improve the microphone distance, direction and vocal delivery.
Listen for plosives, sibilance and changes in voice clarity.
Record what improved on your checklist.
SOUND CREATOR
I can use the equipment or software independently during production.
Complete an individual demonstration. Show that you can independently:
Set up the Zoom H4n Pro and an appropriate microphone.
Select the correct recording inputs and settings.
Adjust gain and monitor audio through headphones.
Position the microphone to capture clean audio.
Record and play back a successful take.
Locate the recorded audio file.
Return all equipment correctly when finished.
Every student must successfully complete the demonstration to earn their Sound — Creator Licence.
When you've earned your licence, return your equipment and move your name magnet to the next lesson.
