Learning Target: I can analyze a film scene, identify the sounds needed to tell its story, and develop a plan for creating an original soundtrack.
In this lesson, you will select a scene from Blade Runner and plan how to replace its entire soundtrack using dialogue, Foley, sound effects, ambience and original music.
Estimated Time: Must Do: 35–40 minutes
MUST DO:
Solo or with a partner
LOCATE THE FILM
Open the Blade Runner folder on your computer and find the movie file.
Rename the Folder with your group name
2. CHOOSE YOUR SCENE
Choose a 60-second to 3-minute scene from Blade Runner.
Look for a scene that offers interesting opportunities for ADR, Foley, sound effects, ambience and music.
3. SET UP YOUR PROJECT
Open Adobe Premiere Pro and create a new project.
Import the Blade Runner movie file.
Select your scene and place it in a sequence.
4. ANALYZE YOUR SCENE
Watch your scene several times without sound.
Think about everything the audience should hear, including sounds that come from outside the frame.
What actions produce sound? What might be heard off-screen? How should the scene feel?
Consider how your sound design could establish the setting, create atmosphere or change the mood.
5. COMPLETE YOUR SOUND DESIGN PLAN
Find Sound Design & Production Plan in your booklet (paper copy in class)
Create a timed breakdown of the ADR, Foley, sound effects, ambience and music needed for your scene.
Identify which sounds you will record, which you will source from sound libraries and which you will create in GarageBand or Logic Pro.
Plan the recording equipment, props and locations you will need.
Choose one moment from your scene. Imagine changing its mood or even its genre entirely through sound.
Could you make it more frightening, mysterious, humorous or emotional?
Identify three sound-design choices that would transform how the audience experiences that moment.
Mark the lesson complete on the classroom pacing tracker.
